2nd Year Biology Courses
Additional Courses cover SACE Curriculum topics not covered in the Biology 1 year Intensive Program*
These are stand-alone advanced Biology courses designed to extend senior Biology learning beyond the 1-Year Intensive. Each course focuses on a specific topic area and is suitable for students preparing for Stage 1 or Stage 2 SACE Biology.
*Courses assume some biology at year 11 or year 12 level.
SACE Stage 1: Infectious Diseases
This course explores how pathogens affect the human body and how the immune system responds. Topics include innate and acquired immunity, cell-mediated immunity, immunisation, and the biology of viral, bacterial, and fungal infections.
Duration: approximately 6-9 weeks.
SACE Stage 2: Biotechnology
This course explores core biotechnology techniques and their applications in medicine, research, and genetics. Students study DNA analysis methods including PCR, electrophoresis, sequencing, cloning, genetic screening, and contemporary gene-editing technologies such as CRISPR.
Duration: approximately 6 weeks.
SACE Stage 2: Homeostasis
This course examines how the body maintains stable internal conditions through feedback mechanisms. Topics include nervous and endocrine control, reflex arcs, hormonal signalling, and regulation of temperature, glucose, water balance, and stress responses.
Duration: approximately 4 weeks.
*SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education) is an internationally recognised senior secondary curriculum.
